CEO Message

I am delighted that you have chosen to visit the Corporate Responsibility (CR) section of our website, intended to provide all our stakeholders with a flavour of our approach to CR and the achievements that we have made in recent years. As always your feedback and comments are welcome, which can be provided by completing our electronic feedback form.
CR has been a concern of the company since an early point in its history. Our Environmental Policy was first approved in1998, articulating our commitment to manage the environmental impacts associated with our operations. Since then, the scope of our CR Strategy has expanded to encompass the economic and social as well as the environmental aspects of our performance. Over the years, our approach to governing, managing, and reporting our CR impacts has also significantly evolved, helping us to gain a strong reputation and several prestigious awards for our achievements in this area (please refer to Our Journey to find out more). This continuous progression has resulted in CR becoming part of the DNA of our organisational culture and integral to our mission statement.

Our CR Policy outlines our goal to be at the forefront of the industry in relation to Corporate Responsibility. In order to achieve this we have decided to focus our CR activities on nine key impact areas which are most relevant to our business:
|
We have established long-term objectives for each of these key areas and we set targets on an annual basis to ensure that we are making progress towards these objectives. Since 2005 we have had CR Working Groups in place which together manage all of our key CR impact areas. The CR Working Groups are overseen by our CR Steering Committee, which I chair.

Since 2004 we have produced annual CR Reports describing our commitments and progress towards social, economic and environmental sustainability. Since our first report in 2004, we have continued to develop, improve, and expand the metrics we use to measure our global CR performance. Since 2006 we have adopted the Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines to help us further embed sustainability into our operations and to share real progress with our stakeholders. Our latest CR Report complies with the highest level (A+) obtainable from GRI, for the second consecutive year!

Sonae Sierra has always viewed CR as an opportunity to make a positive contribution to our world, whilst at the same time achieving significant business benefits, including improved financial performance; stronger stakeholder relationships; enhanced risk management; access to new markets and business opportunities; and differentiating and setting us apart from our competitors. This viewpoint is shared by our Board of Directors: click here to read their views on why CR is important to Sonae Sierra.
